Sound-Signalling Equipment: Requirements
Detailed information on sound-signalling devices and appliances is found in the Collision Regulations. Here are the basic requirements.
- Sailboats and powerboats less than 12 metres (39.4 feet) in length that do not have a sound-signalling appliance must carry one sound-signalling device that is audible for at least one-half nautical mile. This includes PWCs.
- Sailboats and powerboats 12 metres and up to 20 metres (39.4 feet to 65.6 feet) in length must be fitted with a whistle that is audible for at least one-half nautical mile.
- Sailboats and powerboats 20 metres (65.6 feet) or more in length must be fitted with a whistle and bell that are audible for at least one-half nautical mile.
