Course Outline

Pleasure craft operators should use caution in areas where marine mammals may be. Marine mammals include whales, dolphins, porpoises, walruses. To learn more about how far away you operate from marine mammals, visit the Marine Mammals Regulations page.

Operators should take special care when in areas close to whales and whale sightings:

  • Exercise caution in areas where whales may migrate and travel.
  • Be aware that whales can surface unexpectedly. Whales may be unaware of your craft.
  • Keep a lookout for blows. Go slow if you see one.
  • Stay clear of whales by giving them a lot of space. Stay at least 200 metres away.
