Number and Type of Required Fire Extinguishers
Use this chart to determine the type and quantity of fire extinguishers required for your vessel.

Note: One 20-B portable fire extinguisher may be substituted for two 5-B portable fire extinguishers. For vessels with a model year between 1953 and 2017, one 20-B/B-II portable fire extinguisher may be substituted for two 5-B/B-I portable fire extinguishers.
To receive a permit authorizing the use of a vessel as a place of principal habitation or vacation site, the vessel must have on board the required number of portable fire extinguisher according to the vessel’s length.
- Up to 25 feet, at least one B-I or larger extinguisher is required.
- Over 25 feet and up to 50 feet, at least two B-I or larger extinguishers are required.
- Over 50 feet and up to 75 feet, at least three B-I or larger extinguishers are required.
- At least one additional fire extinguisher is required for each additional 25 feet or fraction thereof.
