Rescuing an Overboard Victim

If someone on your paddlecraft falls overboard:

• Toss the victim a PFD, preferably a throwable Type IV.
• Turn around and pull alongside the victim. Approach into the wind or into the current, whichever is stronger.
• If you are in a canoe, pull the victim into the canoe. If you are in a kayak, have the victim crawl onto the stern deck so that you can tow him or her to safety.
