Learning Strokes and Techniques
By taking a hands-on course with a qualified instructor and then practicing, you can learn the basic paddling strokes—forward, reverse, and sweeps (turning). In addition, other strokes and techniques you may want to learn to prevent an emergency from getting out of hand or from occurring at all include:
- Stationary high brace
- Stationary low brace
- Sculling brace
- Low or high paddle brace against waves
- Emergency stopping
- Reboarding a paddlecraft after falling off or overboard
Waiting until you need to use it is not a good time to learn a new stroke.
