Mufflers and Noise Level Limits
Vessel operators may not hear sound signals or voices if the engine is not adequately muffled.
- In New York, it is illegal to install muffler “cut-outs.”
- Vessel engine noise may not exceed:
- 90 decibels during a stationary test conducted alongside a dock or…
- 75 decibels when tested while passing offshore.
- It is also illegal to remove, alter, or modify the muffler system in such a way that will prevent a vessel from meeting these standards.
