OK, let’s talk about cold water immersion. It’s something people probably don’t think about when the water’s cold but the air is pretty warm. So, what do people need to know?
Officer Inman
They need to know that if they do fall in, it could be trouble for them. Your body is going to go into probably a shock gasp reaction, and you could potentially inhale water and start the drowning process.
Rob
And what can people do to prevent themselves from, you know, falling victim to this?
Officer Inman
Obviously, number one: wear your life jacket. In case you do fall in, you’re going to stay afloat. Dress for the conditions. If the water’s cold, the clothes are going to act as an insulation barrier to the cold water on your skin.
Rob
And I think the biggest thing probably is: make sure you know that the water’s cold, even if it’s warm outside.
Officer Inman
Right, yeah, pay attention and realize that you always want to prepare for the worst. You know, it’s not a bad idea to have a bag of dry clothes, just in case you do fall in, to help warm yourself up.
Rob
Awesome. Thank you.
