Prohibited or Restricted Areas for Thrill Craft Operation
As mentioned in the descriptions of ORMAs, areas which close to thrill craft during whale season to avoid possible adverse impacts on humpback whales or other protected marine life include:
In waters off Hawaii Island:
§13-256-155 Kailua Bay Restricted Zones: Zone B, Zone C.
In waters off Oahu:
§13-256-61 Haleiwa Restricted Zones: Zone E.
§13-256-88 Maunalua Bay waters: Zone E, Zone F. No person shall operate a vessel within Zone F at a speed in excess of slow-no-wake. This is a green sea turtle resting and foraging area.
In waters off Maui:
§13-256-112 Maui Humpback whale protected waters. The Maui Humpback whale protected waters are the area encompassed by the boundaries shown on Exhibit "OO-1", dated May 15, 1990. Between December 15 and May 15 of the following year during the whale season, no person shall operate a thrill craft; engage in parasailing, water sledding, or commercial high-speed boating; or operate a motor vessel towing a person engaged in water sledding or parasailing within this area.
