South Dakota Boating Regulations and Laws
The South Dakota boating safety certificate (commonly known
as the South Dakota boating license) is proof that a boater has successfully
completed a boating safety course.
No person under 12 years of age may operate a motorboat propelled by a motor of more than 6 horsepower unless there is a person 18 years of age or older on board the motorboat. No person under the age of 14 may operate a personal watercraft, regardless of horsepower, unless there is a person 18 years of age or older on board the PWC.
Even if not required by law to get the South Dakota boating license,
many boaters take the boat safety course in order to save on their
PWC or boat insurance.
