It's the Law: Before Going Out on Your Vessel
Hull Identification Number
The Hull Identification Number (HIN) is a unique, 12-digit number assigned by the manufacturer to vessels built after 1972. HINs are engraved in the fiberglass or on a metal plate permanently attached to the transom. Write down your HIN and put it in a place separate from your vessel in case warranty problems arise or your vessel is stolen.
Homemade vessels and vessels or motors without a HIN may be assigned a HIN only by the Dept. of Public Safety (DPS), Lake Patrol Section of the Highway Patrol Division.
- The owner submits the proper documents to the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) of the Tax Commission.
- MVD reviews the documents and issues the applicant written instructions to be provided to the DPS.
- DPS inspects the vessel and completes a form to be submitted, along with the other documents, to a motor license agent or MVD for issuance of a title and registration. A copy of the Certificate of Registration must be carried with the vessel and/or motor when in operation.
