Who May Operate a Vessel
Persons under 12 years of age may not operate a power-driven vessel (including personal watercraft) that is propelled by a motor over 10 horsepower unless they are accompanied on board by a person at least 18 years of age.
Persons 12 through 15 years of age may not operate a power-driven vessel (including personal watercraft) that is propelled by a motor over 10 horsepower unless:
- They are accompanied on board by a person at least 18 years of age or ...
- They have successfully completed a boating safety course approved by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department.
It is illegal for the owner or person in possession of a vessel to allow a person who does not meet the age and boater safety education requirements to operate the vessel.
Boating Safety Education Certificate
Operators who are required to complete a boating safety course
must carry their Boating Safety Education Certificate on board the vessel.
