Hello, boater! Arkansas' online boating course has moved. Click here to go to the latest version of the Boat Arkansas course—the official boating safety course of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

The following course material is for reference only. Please go to the new course to complete your Arkansas certification.

Weather Emergencies

Weather can change very rapidly and create unexpected emergencies for boat and PWC operators. Even meteorologists have trouble predicting rapid changes in the weather. You should always watch for changes in the weather and monitor the weather forecast. As an operator, it is your responsibility to take appropriate action based on the weather. Tune a portable VHF radio to a local station that gives weather updates.

If out in severe weather, prepare the boat and passengers. Close all hatches, windows, and doors. turn on navigation lights. Be prepared to remove water by bailing. Have everyone put on a USCG—approved life jacket (PFD). Passengers should sit on the vessel floor close to the centerline.

Decide whether to go to shore or ride out the storm. Head for the nearest shore if possible. If the engine stops, drop a "sea anchor" off the bow.

Look for weather warning display signals. Daytime flags and nightime lights will provide warning signals for small craft, gales, storms, and hurricanes.
